Where does XMPP falls under in OSI Model

XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) is a communication protocol for message-oriented middleware based on XML. In the OSI model (Open Systems Interconnection model), XMPP operates at the application layer (Layer 7). It is designed for real-time communication, such as instant messaging, presence information, and contact list maintenance.

  • BOSH is tcp extension which allows XMPP connections over HTTP. BOSH operates at the application layer (Layer 7) of the OSI model.
  • WebSocket is a communication protocol that provides full-duplex communication channels over a single TCP connection In the OSI model, WebSocket operates at the application layer (Layer 7) as well
  • TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is one of the main protocols in the transport layer (Layer 4) of the OSI model.
